How this screen works
Open interest is the number of futures contracts still open at the end of the day. When it jumps, traders are committing fresh money to a view on the stock - the jump says that positions are being built; the price move alongside it says which way.
This screen ranks every F&O stock by the percentage change in its total futures open interest across all expiries in the latest session, and shows the price change and the resulting buildup classification next to it.
Open interest is summed across every listed expiry of the stock's futures, so the monthly rollover does not show up as a fake drop in one contract and a jump in the next.
Classification: price up with OI up is a Long Buildup; price down with OI up is a Short Buildup. Moves under 0.05% in price or 0.5% in OI are treated as Neutral.
OI change is a positioning fact, not a forecast. Large OI builds often come before results or index events.
FAQ
What does an increase in open interest mean?
It means new futures positions were opened during the session - more contracts were created than closed. Whether that is bullish or bearish depends on the price move: rising price with rising OI is a long buildup, falling price with rising OI a short buildup.
Is this the same as NSE's OI spurts?
It answers the same question - which stocks saw the biggest change in open interest - using total futures open interest across all expiries from the exchange's end-of-day F&O data.
How often does the list update?
Every trading session once the end-of-day F&O data is processed, typically in the evening.
Where are the biggest OI drops?
On the OI losers screen, which ranks the stocks where open interest fell the most - positions being closed.
